The Music & Arts Leadership Academy (MALA) provides online courses in a variety of music and arts disciplines designed to enhance worship for your corps or church groups. These courses are helpful for young leaders to learn basics of leadership or for seasoned veterans to further hone their skills! 

All courses are FREE! Enrolling in a free course will allow you to track your progress as you work your way through the course. Experienced leaders may prefer to skip to specific areas of the course for a refresher or for further study.

Instructors

Territorial Music Secretary Derek Lance

Derek Lance started in his position as Territorial Music Secretary on January 1, 2017 after spending the last five years working in the THQ Music Department. He was also recently appointed as the Bandmaster of the New York Staff Band after spending fourteen years in the solo cornet section.Prior to working for The Salvation Army, Derek was a member of the trumpet section of the United States Military Academy Band at West Point.  During his time there, he was the Principal Trumpet of the Concert Band and was featured multiple times as a soloist.Derek has had the privilege of studying at two of the finest music conservatories in the world, the Juilliard School in New York City and the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.  At these institutions, he had the opportunity to study the trumpet with Mark Gould and David Bilger.  As an orchestral musician, he has performed under such conductors as Charles Dutoit, Otto-Werner Mueller, Christoph Eschenbach, Mstislav Rostropovich, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Yuri Temirkanov and Sir Simon Rattle, and with such groups as the New Jersey Symphony and the New York Philharmonic.As a Salvation Army musician, Derek has been blessed to minister in music around the world with many fine Army bands.  As a soloist, Derek has been featured with the Amsterdam Staff Band, the Boscombe Citadel Band, the Montclair Citadel Band, the PenDel Brass, the Hamilton Temple Band, the Canadian Staff Band, the Greater New York Youth Band, and the New York Staff Band.Derek and his wife, Lorena, attend the Spring Valley Salvation Army Corps in New York with their daughters Isobel and Caroline where he is the Corps Sergeant Major.

Territorial Music Education Specialist/Kroc Fine Arts Liaison Beth Malovance

Beth Malovance is a Smith-Watkins Artist and a Denis Wick Ambassador. She currently serves as principal cornet for both the Chicago Staff Band and one of the premiere competitive brass bands, the Chicago Brass Band. In addition, she is a member of the Brass Band of Battle Creek, the Norridge Citadel Brass Band, and has played with the Athena Brass Band. Beth has served as a Guest Artist for the International Women’s Brass Conference, been a featured soloist in concerts across the United States and abroad, and is featured as a soloist on several albums. She serves as a guest clinician/soloist for events and camps. She has also been a prize-winner at the US Open Brass Band Championship and at NABBA (North American Brass Band Association). Beth currently works for the Salvation Army USA Central Territory as the Music Education Specialist and taught in public education for over 7 years. Her educational background includes a Master of Fine Arts degree in Trumpet Performance from the California Institute of the Arts, a Bachelor of Music degree in Trumpet Performance from the University of Louisville, and a K-12 Illinois Teaching Certificate from Trinity International University.

Territorial Dance Ministries Specialist / Kroc Center Arts Liaison Erin Morgan

Erin is passionate about using dance as a vehicle to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. She loves discovering how dance can be used to shift the atmosphere and share a message. Erin currently works as the Dance Ministry Specialist for the Easter Territory. With a BFA in Ballet Performance from the University of the Arts, Erin has performed professionally with the Rebecca Davis Dance Company and Putty Dance Project as well as being an ensemble member in Mary Poppins at the Walnut Street Theatre. Erin is a certified yoga teacher, and offers YogaFaith classes (Christian, faith-based yoga) virtually as well as in person at events. Erin loves to spend her time with her husband Eli, fat cat Mushu, and a warm cup of coffee.
